Eraser advanced security tool remove sensitive data

Posted by Perfect Imperfection

Eraser - erase files and foldersWhat is Eraser?                    Download Eraser - secure data removal

Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 2003 Server and DOS.
Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.
The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive.
Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defence and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others - passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list can be continued forever.
Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first.
Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface.
Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility.
There are several problems in secure file removal, mostly caused by the use of write cache, construction of the hard disk and the use of data encoding. These problems have been taken into consideration when Eraser was designed, and because of this intuitive design and a simple user interface, you can safely and easily erase private data from your hard drive.

SnadBoy Revelation for Password Recovery

You’ve got the password hidden behind the dots on a webpage/window. But you don’t know what that password is. That’s when SnadBoy Revelation becomes a lifesaver of sorts.
You just need to drag a ‘Circled+’ icon to the text box where the password is and you’ll instantly see the password in the app’s main window. It seems like intimidating at first try, but the tool is actually quite easy to use.
Last week, I was able to recover my network’s password that I had entered on my modem configuration page using this tool. So you never really know when it could come handy.

DriverMax download the latest driver updates for your computer

  Download now
  Awards

Note: DriverMax only works on Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2003 (all service packs). Driver downloads are *only* available for Windows Vista and Windows XP users.
DriverMax is a new tool that allows you to download the latest driver updates for your computer. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Just create a free account, log in, and start downloading the updates that you need.
You can also export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!
Most of the situations when Windows is running slower are caused by faulty driver installations. Windows stores all versions of older drivers just in case you want to go back; sometimes it messes up older versions with more recent ones. The Export Wizard will only export the drivers you select by copying the needed files to a folder or a compressed ZIP file.

After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.

Just one single computer restart will be required after all drivers are reinstalled!

DriverMax is able to display a complete report of all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. This feature can also be very useful when you want to analyze the differences between the drivers installed on different machines.

PeaZip: Open Source Archiver for Windows, Linux & Mac,

Posted by Perfect Imperfection

came across a wonderful open source archiver for windows, linux, and mac recently. It’s called PeaZip and yes it’s open source. Thank heavens. No more free trials!!!
PeaZip will unpack and archive to and from just about any type of file format. The only ones I ever deal with personally are tar and zip so PeaZip works absolutely perfect for me. Don’t be an idiot like me and get stuck on free trials (or even worse, purchasing the actual product) when you can get a tool that’s just as good like PeaZip. Why are people selling this type of software anyways? That’s for a whole other discussion so I won’t get into that. Just check out PeaZip or click here for the link.

The Rasterbator Free Photo Editor

Posted by Perfect Imperfection

The Rasterbator is an application which creates rasterized versions of images. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into enormous (or smaller, if you prefer) posters. Enter the online Rasterbation Gallery to see what the images look like.
The Rasterbator originated as a web application at homokaasu.org, but it has gained so much popularity that the web server occassionally cannot handle the load and a standalone version was in place.
The standalone version is the same as the web version, except that downloading images from the web and image cropping are not supported, and you have to set the output size numerically (number of pages wide/high) rather than using a fancy drag handle. The results are exactly the same.
